A college football comedy, of all things, that took place at a black college in Texas during the 60s.Blake Harris: I think that also earns "left field" status.Sheldon Lettich: [laughing] Maybe. That's just how funny memory can cloud things. You know what I mean? Blake Harris: So we know how Sheldon entered the picture, but how does Jean-Claude Van Damme become involved with Bloodsport?Frank Dux: Oh, Jean-Claude tells this crazy story. And then he said, "What the hell are we doing out here?" The truth of the matter is that Jean-Claude had done a film called No Retreat, No Surrender. Bloodsport wasn't an Oscar-worthy film in any manner (the original cut was deemed unwatchable and a re-edit was completed before release), but Van Damme's stoic charisma and the memorable. And I could see he was really contemplating it. And in that way it works, I can see that. With any film that's based on a true story, there are always questions and curiosities about authenticity. And then Gary Sinese saw the play in New York and he wanted to put it on in Chicago. That was really my very first entry into the Writer's Guild.Blake Harris: Moving up the ranksSheldon Lettich: Yeah, and around this time I wrote a Vietnam screenplay that got me my first agent. All that was missing was an actor to play Frank Dux. And he knows it. He had an answering machine at the time that had a limit of, like, 50 messages. Jason and Paul chat about the latest Star Trek & Star Wars TV shows, Paul digs into Corrections and Omissions from The Specialist, shares a deleted scene from last week's episode about Steven Seagal's blues music career, and announces next week's movie. And when I told about him the purpose of this How Did This Get Made seriesto investigate how movies got made, and the careers of those involvedhe was happy to clear up any misconceptions and provide additional insights into the making of Bloodsport, his two decades of collaboration with Jean-Claude Van Damme and what it takes to write a badass, blow-em-up action film. So those are the three elements. Well later on it comes out in court and it's a picture that they took of me on that pamphlet. He was the one who actually introduced me to beef and oyster sauce. I walked over there and he threw a playful kick at my head. It was just a way to release it. I blame the success of Jurassic Park for this movie. By Earwolf, Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas. If he doesn't have any use for people, he throws them to the side. He knew enough buzzwords to make me think he's the real deal, he's probably been over there. But to my pleasant surprise, Lettich was a complete gentleman. And I showed that in court. Well, here's the reality of the situation. And, look, in the mid-80's, something like that sounded real intriguing. During that time, he's never felt like he had a platform to defuse those lies and tell his side of the storyuntil now. And I said, "Okay, Sheldon, you get the credits, and then when you get up to the next level, you just bring me up." I don't really want to give this guy a platform for more publicity because that's what he's always looking for.". In 1993, Dux got beaten up by a guy in the first tournament, a guy by the name of "Nasty" Zane Frazier, who is known for knocking himself out when he and his opponent rolled out of the ring and hit the floor. I did some research and realized I wanted to do a French Foreign Legion movie. It's a way for me to just flow. He kept saying, "Jean-Claude is poison!" Poison! Because I think he's got a Walter Mitty syndrome. Surprised? We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. Then for Double Impact we thought: let's just go for it. You see it all the time. I don't think Stallone has ever been given his due by movie critics. They were doing a showing of Bloodsport in a theater in my old home town and I just happened to be visiting. "Blake Harris: Can I guess that the novel was The Last Rainbow [by Frank Dux]?Sheldon Lettich: Yup. Did that piece directly lead to Bloodsport? We Hate Movies podcast did Timecop for one of their eps, and likewise, it is one of their best eps. So we pitched him Legionnaire, gave him the treatment and Ed went for it.Blake Harris: You mentioned that Columbia passed on Legionnaire because it didn't "stick with the Van Damme formula." ).Blake Harris: That's great. Plus, we hear LL Cool J's hip-hop prayer and the best . He taught at the Nakano spy school in Japan. And this felt very personal because the guys that were up on stage for those initial performances were pretty much playing themselves in many respects.Tracers, as the play would later be titled, was first presented as a work-in-progress performance piece on July 4, 1980. I think what happened in reality was more interesting, but you have a limited amount of time to tell a story and it has to resonate with the audience, you know? "He was a peaceful accountantuntil he was PUSHEDTOOFAR!" And because of the braces and how the legs were locked togethera steel bar locked them togetheryou couldn't even waddle, you know? So we had a number of people come to my apartment; John would test them out for their acting abilities and we would also try to determine if they were for real.Blake Harris: In what sense?Sheldon Lettich: Oh, I just meant we'd try to determine if they were really Vietnam veterans. He saw the script. I don't know if they ever approached Michael Dudikoff, but basically the producers were in a quandary as to who to cast. At that point, it was to their advantage. They always gave me one camera to kind of use and shoot it the way I'd like to see shot. How else could you get a hold of this? Dux said the military ordered his record sabotaged to discredit him. My body's fully developed, I jumped up like a bean sprout, and now I was eyeball to eyeball with Moore, who this time fought the Unstoppable Mike Stone at Long Beach. And it's interesting because they hide that, you know? Give me your best shot. He had a chance to read them. Took me a long, long time to write that script. On Bloodsport, we got into it during one of the fight scenes. And like I said, guys like Sheldon didn't help, putting a knife in my back.Blake Harris: So what was it like seeing him at the screening?Frank Dux: I was cordial. How Did This Get Made is a companion to the podcastHow Did This Get MadewithPaul Scheer, Jason MantzoukasandJuneDiane Raphaelwhich focuses on movies. After the fight, I go down to him and I said, "Hey, Mr. Moore, do you remember me?" And so, you know, it was just a nice fit. It sold well at the box office, grossing $65 million on a budget of $1.5-2.3 million. It took me years to understand the producer's point, but I do now. So it was lot of college hijinks, trying to get girls and all that stuff. That was the real Sheldon Lettich. I remember him saying, "Michael Dudikoff is a movie star! I remember us going back to his apartment and the thing was entirely full.Blake Harris: Did Menahem change his tune about Jean-Claude?Sheldon Lettich: Well, yes and no. Occasionally he'd come by the studio. I believe that story is 100% true, because Michel Qissi was with him and he told me the same story. So he started taking me to construction sites where I could get work. And regardless of what any critics may say or believe, I don't think anyone would argue that you weren't extremely talented. It was a moment where you have to sit back and realize that sometimes when you think something's wrong, everything is going right. A lot of those shots came from the camera angles I had been directing. I wasn't an actor, but I was a writer, so I got in touch with John and we hit it off. But he had a great imagination, he had good ideas and he knew the martial arts world pretty well. 2. level 1. And Jean-Claude's got a really good sense of how a fight scene should be edited. That picture with my hands crossed, you can see Bloodsport in the background. Bloodsport hospitalizing Superman was lifted directly from his first comic book appearance. On May 1, 1988, just over two months after Bloodsport hit theaters, John Johnson of the L.A. Because there are so many issues with the rights to that project. To my face he's pretending to be my best buddy, but behind my back he's doing everything in his power to undermine me in my career and take credit for my work.Blake Harris: I'm really sorry to hear that.Frank Dux: And that's a typical Hollywood story, right? Showed him a few screenplays that I had written and we decided to work together on this. During the tournament, Dux battles an array of international fighters from various schools of martial arts. And he did that to Sheldon several times. In fact we did the casting at my apartment. So he re-cut the fights, Michael restructured the movie and when we saw the next cut (which was quite a while later), the movie really worked. He's not very good, of course, but the judo instructor steps in for Barney and then kicks the ass of the guy who's been picking on him. And we actually got hired by Motown to write this script! Following his appearances in the two preceding sequels, Daniel Bernhardt returns in the new role of Agent John Keller, who goes into prison . And we ran around like kids, just like kids, and he was showing me this beautiful art deco penthouse apartment in downtown L.A.Blake Harris: That's a great image. His point was that they just wanted to show it was a kid in trouble who could have gone down a different path, but martial arts puts him on the right path. And I was writing for Stallone at the time and I actually asked Jean-Claude for some help with some of the dialogue for a script I was working on.Blake Harris: I imagine that this was during that timeabout two years or sowhen Bloodsport just kind of sat there on the shelves. But Menahem had an in-house fixer named Michael J. Duthie, a really good editor, and he basically re-worked the movie. The truth. Only the part relating to the Kumite because he was going to hang on to the rest of his rights for the rest of his "exploits" for other movies. We have a treatment and we started writing the script. The one who's putting up his "dux? Enjoy, and please share and subscribe! KUMITE! Blake Harris: You had mentioned earlier on that Bloodsport sat on the shelf for two yearsFrank Dux: Yeah, for two years it sat on the shelf. What made you such an extraordinary fighter?Frank Dux: Well, you know what? I mean, I didn't really see it myself, but I heard it from Grant later. One of these covert operatives was one Frank Dux. Yet with Bloodsport, this was not the case. That's not even my name. He took pride in the fact that he was all natural. Why not make a budd. And then one day I get invited down to the Long Beach Invitationals. You can listen to theBloodsportedition of the HDTGM podcasthere. I was just at his house for New Year's Eve. Not about Jean-Claude per se, but about releasing Bloodsport in theaters?Sheldon Lettich: Menahem was persuaded by Samuel Hadida, who had released No Retreat, No Surrender in France (where it was called Karate Tiger) and been a fan of Jean-Claude's ever since then. he's a terrible actor. In fact, I was born with my foot so pigeon-toed that it actually went backwards; my foot, it could go 180 degrees the other way. When I heard that name, it was like bells started ringing. I used my Hebrew name: Benjamin Wolf. Oh man, he f***ing hated that movie. And it may be a typical Hollywood story, but you still never see it coming. And what really grabbed Sheldon's attention was the fights.Blake Harris: So what happened with the script? And the two of them, they didn't talk about it, but they'd basically bicker through their agents because neither one wanted to be the criminal who gets killed at the end. In this video, I speak with the Dan. Also, Idris Elba's voice is just something else. Like Bloodsport is one of his best movies ever but it still resulted in a great episode. But I didn't sleep with a reporter beforehand and I certainly didn't break into my instructor's house and steal a sword. And then the fight was on. "Well, can I show you what I've learned since you taught me?" When. And a lot of those worked well when Jean-Claude recut it.Blake Harris: I suspect that part of the reason they worked is because you, based on your experiences, were able to bring a certain authenticity to it.Frank Dux: I think so too. "Blake Harris: So what eventually changed Menahem's mind? These targets included the planned mining of a Nicaraguan port and the planned sabotage of certain Nicaraguan installations including power stations and weapons depots, codenamed OPERATION CORDOBA HARBOR. With Bloodsport and Deadshot picking up each other weapons in battle. I made a joke and it just took him out of it, snapped him out of it.Blake Harris: Laughter is the best medicine, right?Frank Dux: I took him out of it. Well you know how that ended up. They liked the idea, liked the script, and decided to go ahead and do it as a low-budget movie. And here's the thing that gets me about how stupid people are. And it was no-holds-barred, it'd very brutal and bloody, so it was called "Bloodsport." After directing Jean-Claude in Double Impact [1991] and Lionheart [1990] before that, was there any reason you didn't want to be involved with writing or directing?Sheldon Lettich: That was right after another movie I did called Only the Strong [1993] and I seemed to have a lot of other things going on. And it became real clear and finallyI said show me the proof that I represented myself as a war hero, as a Medal of Honor hero? But then Ed Pressman, who had done Street Fighter, he wanted to do another movie with Jean-Claude. It would have been an expensive movie. I really screwed up. Two, actually. That is not to say that the Tanaka name has no meaning. Do you still believe I that?" I thought that was real interesting.Blake Harris: I imagine that at 11 years old that was a pretty inspiring experience.Frank Dux: Yeah and then three years later, I saw him again. Later on, after Sheldon and I got to talking, I gave it to Sheldon and we reshaped it.Blake Harris: And at what point did the script become called Bloodsport. Especially when you believe that person is your friend.Frank Dux: Exactly. I think Jean-Claude and I have done just fine without 'riding his coattails,' haven't we?". I remember paying for the uniforms. They didn't back me up and they never said anything about seeing my fight footage.Blake Harris: I'm really sorry to hear that.Frank Dux: And one of the things that people don't realize is that after the Times article came out, people were so willing to convict me, just because it was the Times.Blake Harris: I just have one last question for you: since this whole thing grew, in a way, out of your friendship with Sheldon, I was wondering when was the last time that you spoke with him?Frank Dux: I saw Sheldon, believe it or not, about four weeks ago. I mean, the guy announced his malice. And separates Mike's shoulder. It chronicles his training by a Japanese master warrior named Tiger [Tanaka]Shoto Tanemura, a Japanese who is one of a select group of recognized Ninja masters in the world, said in an interview in Los Angeles last week that he had never heard of Dux or Tanaka. I showed him some video footage, and that's how the project started.Blake Harris: Before talking about next steps, I'm curious to hear more about your initial script. Wow.Frank Dux: And he knocked Chuck Norris to the ground several times. But instead, he went back on his word and he did everything in his power to hold me down. And we never had a fight from that point on. So you have to get everyone on the same page and agree to make this movie. I don't remember in detail what our first interaction was like, but we just kind of hit it off.Blake Harris: Was it weird for you at all, as a Vietnam veteran, to be working on a book about the war that was written by someone who hadn't been there?Sheldon Lettich: Well, I didn't know that at the time. In fact, I never even got story credit for it.Blake Harris: That's rough.Frank Dux: Well, Sheldon has made a career out of coming in behind me and putting his name on my work, okay? You can listen to theBloodsportedition of the HDTGM podcasthere. That it would be helpful and therapeutic.Blake Harris: And was it? They could shut me out from sequel rights. And he did the helicopter kick in No Retreat, No Surrender and I was well known for my flying kicks and finishing guys off with my spinning flying kicks. I don't know if the word "genius" is maybe taking it too high, but this is a very smart creative guy who is very much underappreciated. How did that happen? Okay, try him out. Three months later, it formally opened at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles to rave reviews. That editorial attributes statements to me that I never made. And interestingly enough, it was only after Jean-Claude did that to Sheldon that he testified on my behalf in the case for The Quest.Blake Harris: I understand. More Like This Unspooled with Paul Scheer & Amy Nicholson Listen up, film fans! KUMITE! You know, Jean-Claude was totally overwhelmed when he got to work with Stallone on Expendables 2. My very first fight in Tijuana, they were fighting six of us, and there were only five us there; we were waiting for another guy. And Rambo says [putting on a thick Stallone impression]: let me just go get my gear. And they've never wavered from that.Blake Harris: The kick?Sheldon Lettich: Yeah. And there'd be a bunch of people there with phones to record it, so we don't want this to happen.Blake Harris: Speaking of that screening, Frank had mentioned that you were crushed. So I thought that it was a good idea to keep my options open. Especially when it comes to the military. Because believe it or not, Robert DuBois truly was the man known for shooting the Man of Steel with a bullet in DC canon. He didn't know what to think. And were just digging this whole notion of Jean-Claude being a Legionnaire. A simultaneously misleading and fitting title was certainly bestowed upon Bloodsport 4: The Dark Kumite, by far the worst installment of the franchise by a longshot. They didn't have any proper uniforms. And at one of these construction sites, there was a guy doing martial arts. What was all this camaraderie about? And that's why I kept it kind of fictional. with Andy Griffith, where Barney Fife was getting picked on and so he goes to learn judo. I never accused the military of doing it. A number of ideas were thrown out. I should mention that within hours of the piece begin published, we received several unsolicited e-mails from people who had been there and had a significantly different memory of the screening.Sheldon Lettich: [laughing] I'll let you readers draw their own conclusions. You want to fight, let's fight?" Let's make a kickass, balls-to-the-wall revenge movie. In honor of How Did This Get Made?'s #Bloodsport episode, we made this #supercut of Jean-Claude Van Damme's super #butt! Those were my uniforms. Why was that the case?Sheldon Lettich: Because Menahem thought it was terrible. As a result, he's spent the past 28 years dealing with perpetual allegations of being a fake and a fraud. And Jean-Claude's phone began ringing off the hook. I genuinely believed that he believes everything he told me.Sheldon Lettich: I'd tend to agree with you on that. Let's put Jean-Claude in. This thing, it had legs, and started traveling around the world (London, Australia, etc. I wrote the script, got paid a small fee and I can't remember how much time passedprobably less than a yearand via another guy named Lou Horwitza financer who, I believe, did gap-financing at the timeLou took it to Cannon. Because my idea for Rambo III was: well, there's only one place Rambo could goAfghanistan. But, Dux's version of the event is that Frazier . But they called me from Hong KongFrank and Jean-Claudelamenting the fact that "Mark DiSalle was messing up the script." Because he's riding on the coattails of Jean-Claude. Menahem says, "Oh, Corsican Brothers, that's perfect for Jean-Claude! Like I'm a kook because he comes out of a James Bond movie: You Only Live Twice. In this declaration, Commander Martin attests to the following: Frank Dux: As far as my military service goes, I should also mention that I'm named as a source contributor in the US Navy SEAL SPECWAR manual. Told that the tournament was a secret, he said: "We would know. Or actually, a better question: how did Bloodsport first come together?Sheldon Lettich: [producer] Mark DiSalle invited me to lunch. The 20 episodes of How Did This Get Made listed below offer a taste of the world that the hosts have built. I thought Bloodsport was going to ruin my career when it was first cut and put together. This thingwhatever it was calledit was really cool and it would be a cool way to meet chicks.Blake Harris: And how did you go from passively enjoying these things to actual participating and learning how to fight?Frank Dux: I guess one of the things that helped push me in that direction was that I befriended a kid named Grant who had it far worse than myself. And he showed up and said, "I see he didn't show up." I saw Sheldon as my friend, and I was trying to help him. So I go in to pitch my idea and his development executive, she was just flabbergasted when I showed her the magazine cover and told her about the idea. Mr. Dux and I met in Tegucigalpal, Honduras, in the summer of 1985, where I was being briefed by Dux and other intelligence operatives on military targets within Nicaragua.
